Sanrio was founded in 1960 and coined the name “Sanrio” in 1973, creating and selling products marketed around their adorable mascots, the most recognizable being the white cat character, Hello Kitty. Since the company’s beginnings, there have been many cute characters added to the Sanrio universe, each with their own in-depth backstories and unique artistic direction.

These Sanrio characters would make for adorable Pokemon and would be must-haves for your team, taking the cuteness factor to another level.

THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

10 Flour Power: Cogimyun

Cogimyun is a sentient pinch of wheat flour that, one day, hopes to become a fully-fledged rice ball, despite not knowing the ingredients of said food. In terms of appearance, she definitely resembles the fluffiness of flour and has a wholesome expression that would lend itself well to a cute Pokemon.

It’s easy to imagine her frequenting Pokemon cafes, alongside the likes of Alcremie and Swirlix, helping to prepare delicious sweet treats and serving customers. Cogimyun has big dreams that you could help her to achieve, raising her to reach her full potential.

9 Hop To It: Usahana

First introduced in 2001, Usahana has a design that favors the bold color palette which was popular during this time. This adorable bunny has a love for flowers, as she’s often pictured carrying one and wears one on her head.

Owing to her love of all flowers and her dream of becoming a ballerina, Usahana’s signature move as a Pokemon would be Petal Dance, a Grass-type move that uses petals to attack the opposing Pokemon. One of Usahana’s favorite flowers is the sunflower, meaning she would be good friends with Sunflora too.

8 An Apple A Day: Pandapple

The Pokemon series is no stranger to a food-related design and names with wordplay - two boxes that Pandapple ticks. This adorable panda has an apple-inspired design based on his favorite fruit and a personality that’s just as sweet. In fact, his dream is to grow the world’s largest apple.

Although Pokemon based on pandas, such as Pancham and Pangoro, already exist, there’s plenty of room when it comes to cute designs. Pandapple would be a Grass-type Pokemon, owing to his green thumb and love of growing apple trees.

7 Eggcellent Party Member: Gudetama

This lazy Sanrio character is based on a raw egg yolk and uses the egg white as a bed. An idle Pokemon might not be your first choice when it comes to picking your party members; however, Pokemon like Snorlax and Slaking have proven that this can be a benefit.

Similar to Slaking, Gudetama could have the Truant ability, gaining high stats in return for not being able to use moves two turns in a row and loafing around on the second turn instead. After training your Gudetama, it could evolve into various different forms based on cooked eggs, such as an omelet or a hard-boiled egg.

6 Don’t Forget His Blanket: Marumofubiyori

Marumofubiyori, also known as Mop, is a cuddly polar bear who’s never seen without his signature fluffy blanket. He wears this blanket like a cape, covering his head and ears. Not only would this blanketed cub make for an adorable Pokemon, but his trademark look could be used as a battle strategy too.

Much like Wimpod’s Wimp Out and Golisopod’s Emergency Exit, when Mop gets below half HP, he could hide beneath his blanket, summoning another Pokemon on your team to fight in his stead. He would make a cute and strategic member of your team.

5 Scary But Cute Myth: Kappa Rumba

As the name suggests, Kappa Rumba is a boisterous kappa - a turtle-like yokai from Japanese folklore - who enjoys eating watermelon and partaking in various beach activities. With his design being inspired by a creature from folklore, Kappa Rumba could be a mythical Pokemon that people claim to have seen in tropical areas, playing in the water.

Despite his playful design, he could be a formidable ally who uses strong Water-type moves to devastate your opponent, with Surf being his signature move, thanks to his love of all things surfing. His adorable design makes him less frightening than the kappas of Japanese folklore, though no less powerful.

This red panda likes to unwind after a stressful day at the office by going to a karaoke club and singing her heart out to death metal. Similar to Pokemon like Morpeko, Aggretsuko has two opposing sides to her personality - a presentable office worker by day and a metalhead by night.

As a Pokemon, she could have an Ability similar to Moxie to convey this dual nature - every time her anger increases (such as when she’s hit by a move), her Attack stat could rise too. This would also result in a change in appearance, as her calm facade is replaced by a more rage-filled demeanor.

3 Five Is Better Than One: Tenorikuma

The only thing better than one Sanrio character is a group of them working together to get the job done, and Tenorikuma is an excellent example of this. This small gathering of creatures is made up of five red pandas who work together to run a successful cafe, as reflected in their names: Latte, Maple, Macchiato, Frappe, and Chai.

Tenorikuma could fight as one, much like Pokemon such as Falinks, Exeggcute, and Wishwashi. Their move set could correlate to their barista sensibilities, using moves like Scald to take down the opposition with hot coffee.

2 Sea How Cute: Hangyodon

This shy yet lovable fish has a design that would translate well to the Pokemon series as his fish-like qualities are similar to established Water-type Pokemon, while his cartoony design would also bring something new. His design is similar to the classic Hollywood sea monster from the movie Creature from the Black Lagoon, although he is much cuter.

Hangyodon has a kind-hearted nature and dislikes being alone, so he would make the ideal teammate, working well with other Pokemon while using his comedic talent to make them laugh after a tough day of battling.

1 Devilishly Cute: Kuromi

This devilish rabbit is My Melody’s rival and has a penchant for mischief, leading Kuromi’s 5, a group of rambunctious bikers. Her defining characteristics are her black jester hood and devil tail which make her stand out from her pink counterpart.

Kuromi’s villainous nature would make her an excellent choice for a Dark-type Pokemon, known as Evil type in Japan. Many Pokemon of this type enjoy terrorizing others and have an affinity for tricks. Kuromi would fit in perfectly with this dastardly group thanks to her alternative design and personality.
